Understanding Prenatal Yoga

What Is Prenatal Yoga and How Does It Help During Pregnancy?

Prenatal yoga is a specialised form of yoga designed entirely around the pregnant body, its changing needs, its limits, and its remarkable capacity to adapt.

It brings together gentle movement, carefully chosen postures, breathwork, and relaxation techniques that help the body navigate the physical and emotional demands of each month.

A Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training goes well beyond learning a handful of modified poses. You develop a thorough understanding of what pregnancy does to the body, which practices are safe at each stage, and how to hold space for women who are navigating the most profound transition of their lives.

Regular prenatal yoga practice has been shown to ease lower back pain, reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, and prepare the body for labour. It also creates a sense of support and certainty at a time when many expectant mothers feel exhausted and uncertain.

Discipline In Our Yoga Community

Disciplines You Need To Follow In Our Yoga Community

At Vinyasa Yoga Academy, discipline is a practice we choose from within, and it begins the moment you arrive. Our Rishikesh training community is rooted in the teachings of Karma Yoga: selfless service, self-inquiry, and conscious living. These principles shape how you share spaces, how you eat, sleep, and show up for your fellow students and teachers every single day. The yogic spirit of Rishikesh — its ancient ashrams, the sacred Ganga, and the living presence of the Himalayas — quietly leads everything here, making it a uniquely powerful place to truly practice what you learn.

As a student in this programme, you are asked to maintain a sattvic way of living during your yoga training. This means keeping personal and shared spaces clean, refraining from meat, fish, eggs, alcohol, and tobacco, and embracing the early-morning schedule with commitment. These are not restrictions, but tools. They sharpen your focus, calm your nervous system, and create the internal conditions where core shift through learning becomes possible.

  • Every Thursday is observed as a Silence Day, following the traditional practice of "Moana Vratham"
  • Students are encouraged to sleep by 9:30 PM to support the physical demands and early rhythm of the daily schedule

Yoga Alliance RPYT Syllabus

What You Will Learn — Curriculum of the Prenatal Yoga TTC in Rishikesh

The Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training Rishikesh is a specialised toolkit that prepares you to help women manage the profound physical, hormonal, and emotional shifts of pregnancy. This training empowers you to make a tangible difference in a mother’s life, turning a period of physical challenge into a journey of empowered connection with self.

Unlike a standard yoga class, prenatal yoga training is built around safety. From trimester-specific asana and breathwork to prenatal anatomy, meditation, and full teaching methodology, the curriculum is designed to leave no gaps.

Prenatal Asana — Safe Postures for Every Trimester

Prenatal asana is the heart of this training. You will learn which postures support the pregnant body, which must be modified, and which should be avoided entirely — and why. The emphasis throughout is on safety, comfort, and building real confidence in your sequencing decisions across all three trimesters.

First Trimester:

  • Gentle grounding postures and energy-management for early pregnancy fatigue
  • Standing poses for stability and circulation
  • Hip openers and pelvic floor awareness
  • Contraindications in early pregnancy (inversions, deep twists, prone poses)

Second Trimester:

  • Modified sun salutations and standing sequences
  • Supported backbends and side-lying postures
  • Wall-assisted balance work as centre of gravity shifts
  • Prop use: bolsters, blankets, blocks, and chairs

Third Trimester:

  • Restorative and supported postures for later pregnancy comfort
  • Labour-preparation poses: squats, hip circles, hands-and-knees
  • Pelvic floor work and perineal preparation
  • Postnatal recovery sequencing
Prenatal Anatomy and Physiology

Understanding how pregnancy changes the body is the foundation of safe prenatal teaching. This module gives you clinical knowledge of what is happening physiologically at each stage — so your teaching decisions are always grounded in fact, not guesswork.

  • Anatomy of the pregnant body: musculoskeletal, hormonal, and cardiovascular changes
  • Relaxin hormone and its effect on joints, ligaments, and stability
  • Diastasis recti — understanding and managing abdominal separation
  • Pelvic floor anatomy and function during and after pregnancy
  • Common pregnancy discomforts: sciatica, SPD, lower back pain, carpal tunnel
  • High-risk conditions and when to refer: placenta praevia, pre-eclampsia, IUGR
  • Foetal development trimester by trimester
  • Postnatal physiological recovery: what changes after birth and how long it takes
Pranayama and Breathwork for Pregnancy

Breathwork is among the most powerful tools you can offer a pregnant student. This module covers safe pranayama for each trimester, labour breathing techniques, and the science behind how breath regulation supports the nervous system, reduces anxiety, and prepares the body for birth.

  • Safe and contraindicated pranayama practices during pregnancy
  • Diaphragmatic breathing for relaxation and pain management
  • Ujjayi breath: benefits and appropriate use in pregnancy
  • Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) for anxiety and stress
  • Bhramari (humming bee breath) for emotional regulation
  • Labour breathing techniques: slow breathing, surge breathing, J-breathing
  • Breath awareness practices for the third trimester and birth preparation
  • When to avoid breath retention (kumbhaka) during pregnancy
Meditation, Yoga Nidra and Guided Relaxation

Meditation, Yoga Nidra, and guided relaxation are among the most valued tools a prenatal yoga teacher can offer. This module trains you to lead these practices confidently, with specific adaptations for pregnancy, anxiety management, and emotional well-being during each trimester.

  • Introduction to meditation for pregnant women and its clinical benefits
  • Guided body-scan relaxation for pregnancy
  • Yoga Nidra adapted for each trimester: positioning, script, and timing
  • Visualisation and bonding meditations for mother-baby connection
  • Mindfulness techniques for managing fear and anxiety around birth
  • Affirmation-based relaxation practices
  • Savasana adaptations: safe positioning and prop support in second and third trimesters
Yoga Therapy for Pregnancy and Common Discomforts

This module teaches you how to address the most common physical challenges of pregnancy through targeted yoga therapy. You will learn evidence-informed approaches to support students dealing with back pain, pelvic discomfort, fatigue, oedema, and emotional stress — safely and effectively.

  • Yoga therapy for lower back pain and sciatica during pregnancy
  • Managing symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) in class
  • Reducing oedema and swelling through movement and elevation
  • Supporting nausea, fatigue, and insomnia through restorative practice
  • Practices for emotional regulation: anxiety, mood swings, and birth fear
  • Diastasis recti-safe core work throughout pregnancy and postnatally
  • When yoga is contraindicated and how to refer appropriately
Teaching Methodology and Class Design

This is where your knowledge becomes teaching skill. You will learn how to structure and deliver prenatal yoga classes for all trimesters, how to adapt on the spot, how to create a safe and nurturing class environment, and how to communicate effectively with pregnant students.

  • Structuring a complete prenatal yoga class: warm-up, sequence, savasana
  • Trimester-specific class plans from first through third trimester
  • Mixed-trimester group class management
  • Cueing language for prenatal yoga: clear, gentle, empowering
  • Safe hands-on adjustments and when to avoid them
  • Prop use: bolsters, chairs, walls, blankets, and blocks
  • Managing medical disclosures and student intake forms
  • Working with students experiencing high-risk pregnancies
  • Holding space: emotional intelligence and trauma sensitivity
Postnatal Yoga and Recovery

The postnatal period is a critical and often underserved time. This module equips you to support new mothers as their bodies recover from birth — whether vaginal or caesarean — and navigate the physical, hormonal, and emotional changes of the fourth trimester.

  • Physiological recovery after vaginal birth and C-section
  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation through gentle yoga
  • Safe return to practice: the 6-week guideline and why it is not one-size-fits-all
  • Diastasis recti assessment and safe postnatal core rebuilding
  • Postnatal yoga sequences: weeks 1–6, weeks 6–12, and beyond
  • Supporting breastfeeding mothers: upper back, shoulders, and neck
  • Postnatal mental health: yoga for postnatal depression and anxiety
Evaluation and Certification

At the end of the training, students are required to complete a written assessment and demonstrate their ability to design and lead a safe, trimester-appropriate prenatal yoga class. Upon successful completion, you will receive your 85-Hour Prenatal Yoga TTC completion certificate from Vinyasa Yoga Academy — a Yoga Alliance-registered RPYT school — making you eligible to apply for the official Yoga Alliance RPYT credential.

  • Attendance and participation throughout the programme
  • Practical teaching assessment: lead a prenatal class observed by faculty
  • Written test: anatomy, safety guidelines, and teaching methodology
  • Overall conduct and engagement during the training

VYA is an amazing yoga school. They are great teamwork and always be ready for you. They listen to you and bring back the feedback to improve what the opinions and comments are there. On the other hand it's about how you adjust to be fit and ready for this big and super challenging moment in you. The environment are quite noisy and annoying by wild animals plus the sound of horns. Heavy traffic with narrow road but Mother Ganga heals us!
